Defenses

How do you always make me smile?

Through all the space of countless miles?

Why is it that I hear your name,

When empty notebooks leak my pain?

A steady drip, like a slow leak,

Is my resolve each time we speak,

‘Do not jump’ I tell myself,

But your words enslave so very well,

So hard to find a solid grip,

So I laugh, I pun, a little quip,

I find it is a good defense,

For when my wanting makes no sense.
