On Fire

Heed the poet with a burning pen

Fear no flame of righteous word

Ashes scatter where we have been

Where all the bridges burned

Stand too close to the inferno’s eye

Feel the heat of sorrow

Watch the sparks assail the sky

Where you wish upon tomorrow

Burned into your retinal gaze

Visions of yesteryear

Upward in the smoke and haze

Passes primal fear

Dance in the light of pages aflame

With truth that burns your soul

Give the shadows back their name

Fill your chalice full

Words so bright you squint your eyes

Yet still you long to read

For their is no balm or cheap disguise

To cover up the need
