Mother Mountain

Laying there, asleep beneath the shifting light filtered through birch leaves

One arm thrown casually above your shoulder

Eye lids flutter with unfathomable dream

Wrapped up in Mommy’s skirt, because it is orange

And orange is the newest cool thing

I watch a monarch butterfly outside the window pane

Pause to admire the hue, or

Maybe your sleeping face is what he smiles at

I fill my coffee cup, sip, hum into the silence

Que sera sera

And I will stand this way

Guarding this body with the fuzzy ears

The perfect little toes

This form I grew in the wonder of my flesh

While his spirit wanders on the shores of Dream

Soon those lids will flutter like the butterfly does

Blue eyes will open like the first warm day of spring

After a long cold winter

Crisp and clear, like pure water

And they will seek out my waiting green-eyed gaze

Knowing I will be there

A stretch, a groan, a few blinks at the Hawaiian sun

And little Simon will return from wherever his soul has been sailing

With a few new freckles of stardust

And you know the little man always works up an appetite

He will be hungry, and ready for his morning walk…

So I should really go brush my teeth while I have the chance…
